Malaria remains one of the leading causes of mortality among children under five in Sub-Saharan Africa, including in Borno State, Nigeria. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that malaria kills over 200,000 children annually across the continent, making it a critical public health issue (WHO, 2024). Pediatric nursing care in community settings plays a pivotal role in reducing this burden by promoting preventive measures, ensuring early diagnosis, and administering appropriate treatments. Community-based nursing in particular is key to overcoming barriers such as limited access to healthcare facilities, financial constraints, and a lack of awareness about malaria prevention (Greenwood et al., 2023).
In Borno State, where healthcare infrastructure has been strained by conflict and displacement, community-based pediatric nursing could provide a practical and effective approach to reducing malaria mortality. This study aims to appraise the effectiveness of community-based pediatric nursing in reducing malaria-related deaths in the region, considering factors such as prevention campaigns, timely treatment, and community engagement in malaria control efforts.
Despite extensive malaria control efforts, Borno State continues to experience high malaria mortality rates, particularly among children. There may be significant gaps in malaria prevention and treatment practices within the community, especially in rural and underserved areas. The role of pediatric nurses in these communities remains underexplored, and this study will assess the effectiveness of community-based pediatric nursing interventions in addressing these challenges.
This study will focus on community-based pediatric nurses in Borno State, assessing their role in malaria prevention, treatment, and health promotion. Data will be collected through interviews with pediatric nurses, healthcare workers, and local authorities, as well as through reviewing health records. Limitations include the potential difficulty in accessing remote communities due to security concerns, and the variability in healthcare quality across different regions of the state.
